Jimmy has had a broad professional life, ranging from a lengthy period in the United States Army to a lengthy period practicing law. The law practice ranged from a large, multidisciplinary national firm in Atlanta to a smaller, multidisciplinary firm here in Alaska. And those roles were secondary to his role as husband and father (and now grandfather), which he has been focused on for the past 40+ years. Jimmy will tell you the common thread running through all these roles is the pursuit of the protection and support of others.
You are probably most interested today in Jimmy’s professional role as an attorney. After graduating second in his class from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1999, Jimmy practiced complex civil litigation with a national law firm. He joined Hughes White Colbo & Tervooren, LLC, in 2004 and became a partner two years later. Practicing primarily in the fields of family law and commercial litigation, Jimmy has been selected as an Alaska Super Lawyer annually since 2012, listed in The Best Lawyers in America© in Insurance Law since 2009, and received the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys Top Ten Attorney Award several times. Jimmy received his Membership Badge in The 2017 Global Directory of Who’s Who in both Insurance Law and Family Law and was recently recognized by the Global Who’s Who as a Top Lawyer for outstanding contributions and achievements in the law. Jimmy has also trained with the American Institute of Mediation in Marina Del Rey, CA, and Henning Mediation in Atlanta, GA, and has an active mediation practice in Anchorage. Jimmy is an attorney because he has a genuine desire to help others. He finds gratification in his ability to make a difference on important issues that impact people’s lives.
“The person sitting across the desk from me needs my help. I can help them like nobody else can,” he says. “If I turn them away or fail to give my very best effort, I’ve let them down and I’ve let myself down.”
When not in the office or court, Jimmy enjoys virtually any outdoor activity—hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing, and fishing. He’s also a voracious reader, particularly of American Revolutionary War history, and is deeply dedicated to his family.
Jimmy has written for local and national publications. He has been awarded repeatedly by national trial associations and takes his profession as a representative and advocate for those unable to represent and advocate for themselves extremely seriously. The rule of law is the standard upon which this country was built. And a profession in the law requires and should reflect the highest standard of integrity, competence, civility, and respectability. And to successfully accomplish the responsibilities of an attorney, particularly a family law attorney, one requires empathy, a willingness to listen, and avoidance of the propensity to judge. Jimmy is here to help because he genuinely cares.
